Obesity is a significant issue in both the human and animal populations. There are numerous factors that contribute to its prevalence, including improper diet, environment, genetics, and various metabolic diseases. The best way to measure the amount of fat cover on an animal is through Body Condition Scoring. This gives a point of comparison between animals, and indicates how far away from optimum fat coverage an animal is. Many of the health issues that occur as a result of obesity in animals can be extremely costly and prevented through proper diet and exercise. Examples of these conditions include diabetes, osteoarthritis, and coronary heart disease. One of the best options for getting proper exercise is by going to dog parks. This setting creates a unique social community where people communicate their ideas and are able to talk with individuals who may be able to motivate others to exercise. In order to address this issue, we set up an event at a dog park where our group members spoke about the issues involved with obesity, and tried showing them the fun that their dogs would have at the dog park. The psychological phenomenon that occurs when people communicate with one another at dog parks is explored in this paper, and explains how this is no different that the forms of social media like Facebook or Twitter. This will hopefully foster the proper health and fitness attitude, and help it spread through the community.

Often called America’s “silent epidemic,” mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects 5.7 million individuals nationwide. Otherwise known as concussions, mTBIs comprise over 75% of traumatic brain injuries. Fortunately, most people recover completely and are fully functional within a few months. In about ten percent of cases, however, and especially where there has been repeated injury, symptoms can persist and profoundly alter the lives of the affected individuals and their families. Cognitive deficits, memory problems, emotional outbursts, impulsive and erratic behavior, sleep problems, headaches, and other issues can make mTBI much more than a “mild” condition.
Sumo is a super cute, super mushy purebred English Bulldog. He is 3 years old and weighs 55 pounds. Sumo is being picked on by the other dogs at his current home so we are helping to find him a new home. He could be an only dog or he could live with a female dog that won’t pick on him, but it’s probably best if he doesn’t live with another male dog. Most of the time he is good with cats although he occasionally will try to chase. Sumo is very friendly, affectionate and loving. He is good with all humans including children. He’s got a tons of personality and even “shakes” paw on command! Sumo is healthy although he does have typical bulldog health issues- he is prone to allergies and skin infections, he’s had several ear hematomas and, although he walks perfectly fine, he has slight hip dysplasia. He’s already had entropian surgery, ear hematoma surgery and a large skin fold above his nose removed because it was chronically infected. Now his eyes are doing great and his nose fold is nice and clean and infection-free! We will only consider placing Sumo with someone that has experience with this breed. We will only consider placing Sumo in theLos Angeles area.

Hardy is a very loving cat, in spite of everything he has been through. Rescued from filthy living conditions in a hoarder house in Hancock County, Hardy has multiple health issues. Aside from being extremely underweight for an adult cat, he suffers from chronic ear infections that have caused deformation of his ears. His thick fur hides scabs from a flea infestation. All of these conditions are treated at West Suburban Humane Society, where Hardy is recovering from his tough life. Hoarding is a complex disease in which the animal owners’ good intentions actually result in animal abuse on a large scale. Hoarders do not appreciate that their behavior causes harm to the many animals they take in. At least for Hardy, the abuse is over, and he is doubly fortunate to have found his way to WSHS, a no-kill shelter. Hardy’s frail condition would almost certainly have resulted in a death sentence in many other facilities.

PHD, the Pet Health Defender, utilizes Nano Vibrational Technology (NVT), developed by an engineer from Georgia Tech. NVT creates a subtle vibrational energy that strengthens and synchronizes the natural frequencies of the biofield (body energy) and the individual cells of which it is comprised. This enables your pet to more capably resist the effects of any stress encountered, including pests, health issues, environmental duress and other conditions that may be potentially harmful.
Dr. Valese of the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono in PA speaks about the importance of cats receiving routine veterinary care. Just because you cat is indoors doesn’t mean they’re not susceptible to disease or other serious health issues.
