Hi! Im veterinarian and Purina Cat Chow Mentor Doctor Karen Sueda. While maintaining regularly scheduled visits to your veterinarian is a must, getting to know what is normal for your kitten or cat is a great idea. I like to encourage people to work this basic home health check into their grooming or snuggle time it works out nicely because your kitten should be relaxed and easy to handle. Generally speaking, a healthy cat has the following characteristics:Eyes that are bright and clear without signs of irritation or discoloration. There shouldnt be evidence of tearing or cloudiness. If discharge collects in the corners of her eyes, clean them with a cotton ball and warm water. Your kittens mouth should be free of sores or growths, she shouldnt have bad breath, and there shouldnt be any signs of red or swollen gums. Her ears should be clean and free of odor and there should be no signs of parasites like ear mites. Her nose should also be clean and free of discharge. Your kittens coat should be shiny and silky and her body should be smooth. While youre petting her, feel for lumps, ticks, and check for fleas or bare patches. If you find anything unusual, check with your veterinarian. It may sound a little overwhelming at first, but youll find that all of this comes easily and naturally when youre together. Thanks for watching! And remember that giving your kitten lots of love and affection will help build the foundation for your happy, healthy life together.
