Are You a Dog or a Cat Person?
Most of us would say were one or the other, and a new study finds that the animals we like say a lot about us. According to CNN, researchers at the University of Texas asked 4,500 people a series of personality questions to gauge whether they were introverted or extroverted, agreeable or neurotic. They then asked the participants if they considered themselves cat people or dog people. They found that dog people are typically more extroverted and less neurotic than cat people. Cat people, on the other hand, were more creative and philosophical, but far less social and outgoing than dog people.
Sam Goslin is a psychologist and the lead author on the study. He says it makes sense that certain personalities are drawn to certain animals. Dogs are more social creatures; they like to hang out and be around humans. Theyre perfect animals for people who are outgoing and love to lavish attention on other living things. Cats, on the other hand can be more stand-offish and independent. They want human interaction for a while but when theyre over it, they disappear.
This study wasnt just about seeing who liked what. According to Goslin, the goal was to help doctors find the right animal for people undergoing pet therapy. Pet therapy is a treatment where patients with mental health issues or physical challenges work with animals to overcome their problems, and its been proven to help everyone from cancer patients to troubled teens. The trick to pet therapy is that the patient needs to connect with the animal. Without a solid connection the treatment may not work. So matching up personality types is a way doctors can find the right pet for the right patient.
