Chewing on electrical cords can cause burns to your cats mouth or it can cause respiratory problems, cardiac arrest or even death. Because of their inquisitive nature and their sharp teeth your cats health can be at high risk.
What can you do to prevent this? Tape your electrical cords to the wall with electrical tape to prevent your pet from chewing on them. Stow any excess length of cord behind or under furniture or appliances. Keep them hidden from your cat. If they can see then they become curious about them. If they must be where the cat can see them use the commercial wrap you find at hardware stores to cover the cord. Or use heavy duty cords that are too thick for your cat to bite through.
You can place contact paper with the sticky side up near the cords to train your cat to stay away. Put an unpleasant tasting substance on the cord so the cat will not like them. Some items you might use include bitter apple spray, menthol, toothpaste, or lemon juice. You may need to experiment because cats have different tastes just as we do.
Keep your furry friend out of rooms with exposed cords until they lose interest in them. Have toys available to distract them. Rotate the toys regularly to avoid boredom.
One of the easiest solutions is to rub the cords with a bar of soap. Moisten the soap first as it makes the job easier. The soap will last longer than the bitter apple spray and is more effective than hot sauce. This will work well enough that the cat will be reluctant to reach for untreated cords as well.
Accidents around the house is one of the common reasons for injuries to your pet and can be very dangerous to your cats health. We must always be on the lookout for any type of danger that our baby may get into and try to make the environment safer for them.
