Your cat’s health is important. Your veterinarian can teach you all about the many health conditions your cat could experience, but it is also important to learn about such things on your own. If you want to be sure that you cat is getting the best care possible, you need to watch for signs that something may be wrong with your pet. We will bring you many ideas and suggestions on helping you maintain your cats health on your own. However we would never reccommend you avoid your vetrinarian and reccommend that you take your cat for its scheduled routine checkups.  Our concern is that your cat’s health is maintained and you have a happy healthy life with your cat.

Cats are animals that like to chew on plants that have green foliage. For most cats this means that indoor plants are a common item to chew. A lot of your indoor plants can have a serious consequence on your cats health. Plants that are poisonous to cats are common in many households and can lead to serious issues with your cat. Learn more about plants that may be toxic to your cat and try to be sure our home environment is safe for our cat or kitten. If you have plants in your house and are not sure if they are safe for you cat it is best to remove them from your cats environment until you know more about the plant.

Sometimes the plant itself isn’t harmful to your pet but the insecticide you use may be. Also be aware that many of the plants you buy in stores and nurseries may have been sprayed with insecticides. You must be very careful what you bring into the house if you have a cat or kitten. Often the insecticides cause the plant to be harmful to your cats health.

To be safe ask the vendor selling you the plant if insecticides have been used on the plant. You can also ask if the insecticide is safe for the cat and if you can’t get a clear answer from them then avoid the plant.

You can also train your cat or kitten no to chew on the leaves by using lemon juice on the leaves. Dilute the lemon juice with water and spray it on the leaves of your plants regularly. The lemon juice is not tolerated well by the cat or kitten and they will quit chewing on the leaves after getting a taste of the lemon juice. However if your plant is poisonous do not spray the leaves remove it from the environment completely. This is the only safe method to protect your cat from the toxic plants.

Another way is to give your cat it’s own plant to chew on whenever it likes. Cats use the plant to aid in digestion and to help eliminate the fur balls. You can now find special cat grass in many pet stores. Other plants that cats enjoy and can be used in moderate amounts include catnip, parsley, sage and thyme.

Giving your cat common grass from the yard is not advisable as the spines in the grass can harm your cats digestive tract.

Tapeworms and roundworms are two of the most common intestinal parasites you will see in your cat and can affect your cats health. Tapeworms are long segmented worms that are flat and can break into sections. Roundworms are much shorter and have round bodies.

Roundworms are propagated by microscopic eggs which are shed in the cats stool. Tapeworms reproduce by segments which break off. These segments contain the egg and are passed from the cats rectum. You will frequently them around the cats anus or where the cat lies. They will look like grains of rice.

Roundworms are very common and are passed from one cat to another when the eggs are passed in the feces and then ingested by the other cat. They can also be eaten by a mouse or other small animal and then passed when the cat eats the animal. One additional way they are passed is in the mothers milk if she is infected. It is safe to assume that kittens are infected.

Tapeworms are passed to another cat when the segments are passed in the feces and then consumed by flea larvae then when the cat is grooming it consumes the flea and becomes infected. If you cat has flea infestations it is safe to assume that it may be infested with tapeworms.

Another type of tapeworm is consumed by rodents and is then consumed by the cat. This type is less common than the one eaten by fleas. If your cat is an outside cat or frequents the outdoors it is likely to become infected.

There are a wide variety of treatments available over the counter and from your veterinarian to treat these parasites and help maintain your cats health. It is best to ask your veterinarian for recommendations as to what you should use. Your kitten should be treated initially at 6 weeks due to the possibility of maternal infestation. These treatments should be repeated at 8 and 10 weeks. You should treat your adult cat regularly for prevention.

With newly acquired cats it is best to worm immediately if they are at least six weeks old and then repeat the treatment in about two weeks. You should always be aware of the signs of infestation and monitor for the sake of your cats health.

It will come as a surprise to new cat owners an be old hat to those who have owned cats but cats health issues arise on a routine basis.

Hairballs

Cat’s are constantly grooming themselves as they are very clean animals. While grooming they are licking their fur to clean and smooth it. As they do this they remove the loose hair and swallow part of it. In doing so the hair accumulates in the cats digestive tract. The cat usually has no problem dislodging this hair and will gag, hack and cough leaving the owner a deposit of hair, food and mucous on the floor. This is more bothersome to the owner than to the cat.

Occasionally the cat will not cough up all of the hair and it passes into the lower digestive tract causing problems for your cat. It will block off the tract and can become a serious life threatening problem for your cat. If your cat becomes listless, quits eating, their coat becomes dull it could be a serious problem with a blockage. Your cat would need to be evaluated by their vet to assure your cat’s health is maintained.

To prevent hair balls you need to be sure to groom your cat brushing or combing its fur to remove the lose hair on its body. There are also foods on the market specifically designed to help the hair pass through your cats digestive tract.

This is the first in a series of articles related to cat health which we will look at in the posts on this site.
